Read MoreABOVE: The Stanley steam tandem was used to pace Eddie McDuffee in his 1899 season, achieving three mile records. The tanks sitting either side of the engineer (back) contain six gallons of ‘raw gasoline.’ The other tall tanks behind the steersman (front) contain 60 pounds of compressed air, which are used to vaporise the gasoline to then heat the boiler. The large sign written tank at the front holds the water supply with the slogan ‘Oh Stanley Oh’ Well, that;s what the period photos seem to portray.
